Book Review: “The Singularity is Near,” A Transhumanist Manifestoby Rebecca Taylor
So I finally did it. I sat down and read The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil. And while many question Kurzweil’s calculations, and his unbounded optimism about the technology of the future, The Singularity is Near is possibly the closest thing to a transhumanist manifesto as you can find.
It was as enjoyable to read as eating sand, not only because of what it offered: endless pages of technical jargon, but also because of what it didn’t: any sense of anything other than “self.”
What is the Singularity? Well defining it is a bit like nailing Jello to the wall, but I will give it a try. The Singularity is the moment when human intelligence merges with non-biological technology to vastly enhance our capabilities. The word singularity is derived from the mathematical term referring to a value that does not have a finite limitation. So essentially, after the Singularity, human intelligence, with the help of machines, will no longer be limited to what can be accomplished in our finite brains. With technology, it has the chance to become infinite.I will let Kurzweil explain the Singularity:“The Singularity will allow us to transcend these limitations of our biological bodies and brains. We will gain power over our fates. Our mortality will be in our own hands. We will be able to live as long as we want (a subtly different statement from saying we will live forever.)”
“The Singularity will represent the culmination of the merger of our biological thinking and existence with our technology, resulting in a world that is still human but transcends our biological roots.”Basically, we will merge with our technology, and Kurzweil predicts:“There will be no distinction post-Singularity, between human and machine or between physical and virtual reality.”

The second they come to [Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE], we have to treat them with a completely different standard. We throw law enforcement and security protocol… out the window.”Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, says his group worked with members of Congress to put the brakes on the idea.

Having said that, the Mayan end-of-the-world thing in 2012 seems to have gone quiet. Almost like people realised that all that 2012-bruhaha was rubbish (the movie and the predictions). But this doomsday scenario is less about that guy from Hi-Fidelity and CGI and more about overpopulation. According to the UK’s Mail Online:“Rising populations are driving Earth towards a 'tipping point' where species we depend on die out, says a committee of 22 scientists - hitting industries such as fishing, agriculture, forestry and water. Some areas of the planet may already be so overpopulated as to be beyond hope - and once the planet is more than 50% under tarmac and agriculture, the results could be global disaster.”Apparently small-scale ecosystems have shown that once 50-90% has been altered, the entire ecosystem tips irreversibly “into a state far different from the original, in terms of the mix of plant and animal species and their interactions and usually resulting in species extinctions and a loss of biodiversity.”Now, extrapolating that out to the global level, these 22 scientists (not named in the article – I bet you they teleconference but speak from the shadows so you never get to see their faces, just their pale, pale hands folded neatly on a rich mahogany desk...) are saying that if 50% of the Earth’s surface is converted to agriculture and urban use, then we could face “most unpleasant surprises”.
Político é engolido por cobra Sucuri no Amazonas
Um deputado de Santa Catarina foi engolido por uma cobra Sucuri, na manhã desta quarta-feira (8), durante um passeio pelo Amazonas. De acordo com testemunhas, o deputado fazia um passeio de barco, bebia uísque e contava dinheiro de uma maleta, bastante feliz, quando foi surpreendido pela cobra. “Eu vi quando a cobra pegou, enrolou, e engoliu”, contou um pescador que estava próximo do local.
Após presenciar o ataque da sucuri contra o deputado, o pescador foi até uma comunidade buscar ajuda. Entretanto, ao invés de conseguir ajuda, conseguiu na verdade foi alavancar gargalhada do povo. “O povo começou a rir, e até bolaram no chão gargalhando, quando eu contei que o engolido foi um político”, disse o pescador ao repórter de G17.
A esposa do deputado foi informada do ocorrido na tarde de hoje. “Eu acho é pouco. Quem mandou ir esconder dinheiro no Amazonas”, disse a viúva.

Turkish Prime Minister Angry that Promoters of Abortion Crippling Economic Success
Turkey’s Prime Minister has expressed his anti-abortion stance in surprisingly strong words for a politician, albeit an Islamic one, linking the procedure to murder and saying the resulting curb in population growth is ‘crippling’ for Turkey’s economy. Abortion has been legal in Turkey for the last 40 years. For us in New Zealand, it is hard to imagine a politician or judge standing up for the rights of the baby in the womb – a ‘foetus’ is not defined as a legal person here. It is also interesting that the tide seems to be turning on the population debate in that politicians are starting to link economic success and population growth.Turkey’s cabinet is currently debating a report by the Health Ministry which may result in abortion either being made illegal, or legal only in the first ten weeks of pregnancy in certain cases. The Health Minister squarely backs the Prime Minister saying that women’s rights are a separate issue to abortion because the baby itself already has rights.
